September 22-23, 2011 International Contrast Ultrasound Society Bubble Conference Update
The ICUS meeting took place September 22-23 in Chicago. It was an interesting mix of bench scientists, cardiologists, and radiologists. The first part was a summary of current efforts to promote contrast ultrasound approval by ultrasound societies around the world. One hopeful development reported is the reestablishment of the medical imaging drugs advisory committee (MIDAC) by the FDA. The point was made that the FDA is now tasked with dealing with excess radiation issues for the American public, which could help CEUS initiatives. There is an FDA white paper regarding unnecessary radiation exposure from medical imaging. The Joint Commission is also concerned about excessive radiation levels (sentinal event alert 47).
Dr Barry Goldberg gave an update on the Bracco phase 3 adult liver trials. This trial compares CDUS with CEUS, using CT and MRI as truth standards. The trial should end late this year. There were numerous discussions of adult cardiac applications including left ventricular function, LV clot, and myocardial perfusion. There were nice examples of CEUS for carotid disease. Dr Stephanie Wilson gave a presentation demonstrating the superiority of CEUS over non-contrast CT in patients with contrast allergy or renal failure. There were interesting papers on CEUS for clot lysis, as well as for drug and gene delivery.
It was very helpful to meet the ICUS advocacy and communication team. An ICUS-SPR collaboration will be helpful to advance mutual goals.
All in all the meeting was very interesting in spite of the emphasis on adults. Perhaps in the future work on pediatric applications will be presented.
