ABR Offers Pilot Test at RSNA 2009

The American Board of Radiology (ABR) announces it will offer a pilot of its new practice-profiled Maintenance of Certification examination for diagnostic radiology at the 2009 RSNA Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting in Chicago. The pilot administration will allow the ABR to fully evaluate critical aspects of exam readiness, including image quality and exam content, and assist in the construction of the live version, which will be offered for the first time in 2010. The purpose of the pilot is to ensure the ABR presents the best, most psychometrically valid exam possible, and the feedback of examinees is vital to this process.

The ABR invites select diplomates with time-limited certificates expiring from 2009 – 2012 to participate in the pilot. This practice-profiled exam will consist of twenty percent (20%) non-interpretive skills (patient safety, professionalism, basic life support, etc.) and eighty percent (80%) clinical content related to each diplomate’s self reported domain of clinical practice. A listing of non-interpretive skills and clinical content areas can be found at http://www.theabr.org/moc/moc_dr/moc_dr_comp3.html.

The ABR states: "Taking the practice-profiled exam is of benefit to you because a passing grade fulfills your Part Three Cognitive Expertise MOC requirement. The construction of the modules has incorporated recent case material, assembled according to exam blueprints based on contemporary practice data and judgment of experts in the field. Failure of the exam does not result in any penalty to you; in such an event you would be eligible to take the exam at a future offering without a retake fee."

If you are interested in participating, please complete the following as soon as possible:

  1. Fill out your practice profile by logging in to your personal database (PDB) at www.abronline.org and clicking on Part 3 Cognitive Expertise. Declaring your clinical practice profile will allow the ABR to determine the content modules you will be given at the exam if selected for participation.
  2. Ensure you are current on all fees owed to the ABR.
  3. Submit an exam registration form, found at http://theabr.org/forms/moc_profile_register.pdf.

The ABR notes:  "Due to limited seating and the ABR’s need to evaluate specific information, examinees will be selected based on practice profiles submitted by September 1st, 2009. Exam registrants opting to take the practice-profiled exam may be given priority. You will be notified as to whether you are a selected examinee within 4 weeks."
