Re: State of the Society – January 2007
In 2007 the Society holds its 50th meeting.
In 1958, the year the first meeting was held in Washington, DC, many current SPR members were not yet born (including at least one Board member!); others were pioneering our infant specialty. The names of the invitees to that first meeting at the Shoreham Hotel in Washington include our early teachers and investigators. These gentlemen (and they were all men) planned to gather for a "jam session" for the free, informal exchange of ideas.
Note -A PDF of the original invitation to that first meeting was distributed to all members in the Fall 2006 member mailing and is available on the website under Member Communications should you wish to take another look)
The rest is, as they say, history. The SPR has met each year since 1958.; the list of past meetings follows this letter.
Great ideas are not always heralded with trumpets; many seem significant only in hindsight. Some ideas gain momentum and improve with time. That "jam session" was a good idea in 1958 and, because of the continued innovations of its members and the drive to serve the specialty and care for children, SPR thrives as a great organization today.
As 2007, the year of the 50th meeting dawns, we thank the SPR members who gathered at the table at the Shoreham Hotel in September 1958 and hope the 12 who continue to claim membership will join us in Miami.

SPR Historian, Dr. Alan Schlesinger, is working with president, Dr. Marilyn Goske, to celebrate the history of the Society at the 2007 meeting. We hope you’ll join us in the commemoration.
The Finances of the Society and the Foundation are healthy. Both organizations, separately incorporated, are valued at approximately $1,000,000. Prudent financial management dictates that we not operate from reserves, and we do not. We clearly will not recommend a dues increase for the next year.
The Board strives to build an Educational menu of activities that meets the changing needs of our members and which is relevant to current practices. Besides planning the annual meeting, we now plan regular ALARA conferences and Cardiac Imaging Conferences. The Board recently approved the one-time MR Urography symposium for February. The membership is encouraged to propose new initiatives which will benefit our patients and specialty growth.
Outreach is a new concept for SPR. Watch for news about both international outreach, led by Dr. Sarah Chilton, and opportunities to share our expertise with the general radiology public.
Collaboration and Synthesis - SPR’s new relationship with the ACRaffords us increased and stable staff support and access to a wealth of knowledge and services. Representatives of SPR’s leadership team will attend a meeting at the ACR headquarters in February to learn about ACR initiatives and explore opportunities for the issues specific to pediatric radiology to be heard.
Workforce issues - The manpower shortage affects us all and we are taking action. The SPR and the ACR Commission on Pediatric Radiology formed a task force whose mission it is to identify the factors that influence residents’ subspecialty decision. The task force, led by Dr. Dorothy Bulas, met at RSNA and is developing a coordinated campaign to educate the members on promoting the specialty on a grassroots level. More will be announced at the meeting in April.
